The addition of Newark to the Glasgow Airport departure boards takes the airports direct trans-atlantic network in Summer 2026 to 4 destinations;

  • Cancun, Mexico
  • Melbourne Orlando, USA
  • Newark, USA
  • Toronto, Canada

Flight UA230 will depart Newark at 2215 and arrive in Glasgow at 1010 the following morning between May 8th and October 23rd.

Flight UA231 will depart Glasgow at 1400 and arrive in Newark at 1635 between May 9th and October 24th.

Response From the Airport and Local Figures

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome United Airlines back to Glasgow Airport. New York is the most requested destination from our passengers, and this new service will provide a vital link for both leisure and business travellers. It also represents a major opportunity for inbound tourism, with hundreds of American visitors arriving daily to experience Scotland’s world-class golf, whisky, and stunning landscapes. This route will be a fantastic boost for the region and the wider Scottish economy.”

“This success is testament to the ongoing efforts of our route development team and our focus on working closely with our like-minded partners across the Glasgow City Region. Our new owners are committed to strengthening Glasgow’s connectivity alongside delivering a best-in-class airport as part of the multi-million-pound investment programme announced in April this year.”

With reference to the second paragraph this is a significant announcement for the airport as the new AGS CEO Kam Jandu highlighted the work his team were undertaking to start re-establishing links to the USA back in April – this is the second destination named by Mr Jandu that has been established following WIZZ Air annoucning Milan in August.

This route has also been welcomed by business leaders and politicians in the city, with Glasgow City Council Leader Susan Aitken adding;

 “This is a very welcome return to Glasgow for United Airlines and a significant boost for our economy. The US is Glasgow’s largest international visitor market with Americans spending around 720,000 bed nights and £111 million in our city every year.*

“The reintroduction of a direct, daily seasonal service between two of the world’s most dynamic destinations will bring considerable cultural and tourism benefits, as well as connect businesses across the west of Scotland with one of the world’s largest economies.

“There will undoubtedly be strong demand for this new route and we are looking forward to working with United Airlines, Glasgow Airport and wider city and national partners to ensure it is a success.”

Adding to those comments, Stuart Patrick the Chief Executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce also added;

“Securing a new direct route to New York City is a landmark achievement for both the city and the airport. The United States remains one of our most important trading partners, and with East Coast of America being a priority export market for the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, this news will strengthen efforts in attracting inward investment and international trade.

“Huge credit is due to the dedicated staff and the new ownership group at AGS, whose commitment to championing our city and tireless work have made this development possible.

“We warmly welcome United Airlines and look forward to building a strong partnership with them at this exciting new chapter for our city.”

Passenger Numbers Until 2020

Passenger numbers were, on average, declining year-on-year between 2015 and and 2019, with numbers decreasing by 53.37% in this time as a result of the airline reverting from year round operations to summer seasonal.

Although far less useful for this particular case as we only have a single years data, the split between US passengers and Foreign passengers on the route in 2019 is below;

  • US Passengers: 52.8%
  • Foreign Passengers: 47.2%

How Many Seats in 2026?

The MAX 8 which will operate this route is equiped with 16 Premium Economy seats, 54 Economy Plus and 96 Economy seats giving a combined total of 166 seats, each flight.

With 169 days of operation (doubled for a return trip) on a 166 seat aircraft that means 56,108 seats are available in Summer 2026 on this route – meaning if every seat was sold the total passenger numbers would fall between the 2017 and 2018 totals
